TV GUIDE REVIEW

Some quotes:

Dean
I don't even know where to start with him. There were so many emotions swelling up inside him and they were all emotions he would love nothing more to get rid of so he could become numb. The anger flaring in the first scene when he was going up against Uriel; the helplessness in being faced with going to hell again; the guilt and shame in having to betray Anna for his brother; the sheer despair when he told Sam what went down in hell. How is this guy walking around acting like he's not affected when all of this is going on inside him? And how is he going to bottle it all back up once again? Because he's Dean Winchester, that's why.

When Sam asked Anna if there was anything out there that could take care of an angel, I was surprised again. Sam would do anything for his brother just like Dean would do anything for Sam. Even though it was such a messed up kind of question, I liked being reminded of Sam's devotion to Dean.

Jensen continues to amaze. Seriously. There were several times when I was so caught up in what he was conveying I totally forgot to take notes, especially that last scene. At least twice I was reduced to wondering if something was in my eye, if you get my drift. And Jared gets kudos in that last scene as well, cause you could see Jensen's emotions getting the best of him as much as they were getting to me. I love the way those two work together. It's a thing of beauty. I don't know if I spend enough quality time talking about their chemistry, but they just have it all going on.

I am working on a DEAN/CASTIEL/SAM/JOHN meta...the hiatus is long. I guess we have to survive it :)

116. The Navigator Eoin McNamee (3/5)

Eoin McNamee brings us a good first venture into the realm of middle-reader speculative fiction. There are elements of Philip Pullman and Garth Nix here, and it also reminded me a bit of Jeanette Winterson's recent children's novel, Tanglewreck. It's less ambitious than Tanglewreck, though, and I'm inclined to see that as a good thing, since that one really got mired down toward the end.

In contrast, The Navigator moves along at a fast clip and refuses to get too involved in the mechanics of the world (which is not to say that the background is not detailed), and it's a cracking good yarn for younger readers. As an adult, I felt that at times the author relied too heavily on coincidence (or providence?) to move the plot along, but that didn't keep me from devouring this in short order. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel eventually, but I didn't feel the need to rush right out and get it. Overall, this is a seriously solid novel and well worth reading, but it's nothing breathtaking.

117. Bone Vol. 8: Treasure Hunters Jeff Smith (4/5)

The Bone saga continues, as Bone, his cousins, Thorn, and Gran'ma Ben finally reach the city of Atheia, where they join the throngs of refugees and attempt to keep a low profile. All is not well in the city, however; honoring the dragons has been outlawed in the city, and its ruler is determined to prevent anything resembling a challenge to his authority. Meanwhile, the Rat Creatures and their allies march on the city, and it's not entirely clear whether its defenses will hold.

I really wish these collections were longer! Each entry is great, but I'm always left chomping at the bit for the next installment.

118. The Discworld Graphic Novels: The Colour of Magic & The Light Fantastic Terry Pratchett, illustrated by Steven Ross (3.5/5)

This is a decent adaptation of the first two Discworld books. There are a few hiccups in the quality control -- there are a few times when people's clothing changes color from one page to the next, and at times the reproduction is a bit blurry -- but overall the adaptation is a good one. Steven Ross's beefcake-fantasy style art is an excellent choice for these two books, which parodied so many cheesy fantasy tropes. The contrast between Rincewind and Twoflower and the fantasy characters they meet (such as the dragonriders and various barbarians) is hilarious, with these two little dumpy figures being surrounded by improbably muscled men and gravity-defying, scantily clad women.

I would not recommend reading this in place of the actual novels, since stuff is left out (of course), but this volume stands alone quite well, while also appealing to diehard Pratchett fans.

hey knitters!
I have my needles, I have my yarn (and more yarn - actually enough yarn for four pair of socks!), but I don't yet have a pattern.

Many have been suggested. I was going to go with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's basic sock recipe, but I think I want a toe-up pattern to allow for maximum yarn usage/sock height.  But then I see how popular her recipe is and maybe I'm wrong?

The recipe looks easy to follow and I like the way it is written, so I'm tempted to go with it.  What do you think?

And yes, I'm totally over analyzing my foray into sock making.

Font ID please?
Can someone tell me what the font for "abusive boyfriend" with the down arrows for "i"  in this icon is? I have seen it used around before, but for some reason I can't remember its name!

Thank you in advance.

Book #51
Book Title: Beach Girls
Author: Luanne Rice
Category: fiction; romance; chick lit
# of pages: 428
My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: C+
Short description/summary of the book: (taken from amazon.com):Like a milder Northern cousin of Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, Rice's latest (following Dance with Me) celebrates the near mystical persistence of female bonds. While summering in the seaside town of Hubbard's Point, Conn., Emma Lincoln, Stevie Moore and Maddie Kilvert, the titular beach girls, were inseparable, but as adults, they've drifted apart. Stevie lives like a hermit in Hubbard's Point, unaware that her old friend Emma died in a car crash, leaving behind a husband, a child and secrets. When widower Jack brings his daughter, Nell, to the Point, Nell searches out her last link to her mother: Stevie. A bestselling children's author, Stevie is drawn to Nell and her attractive dad, but the protagonists must struggle with doubts and fears before they can consider a future together. This book is more sentimental and less suspenseful than Rice's previous novels, and fans of her earlier book, The Perfect Summer, may find the premise—a spouse who dies suddenly, with secrets that leave family in disarray—overly familiar. Fortunately, Rice's gorgeous descriptions and sensitive characterizations compensate for those flaws. Few writers evoke summer's translucent days so effortlessly, or better capture the bittersweet ties of family love.

My Thoughts: This was not one of my favorite Luanne Rice books. The storyline was ok but the book seemed to drag on quite a bit. I think if it had been a shorter book it could have honestly been better and I would have given it a higher grade.

Books read this year: 51/50.

Next read(s): I just started reading Sea Glass by Anita Shreve.
